A perennial favorite gets even better

Over the years, Fujifilm has garnered worldwide acclaim with photography enthusiasts for their X100 Series cameras. The latest iteration, the X100V, has an even better image sensor and processer than previous models, allowing photographers to capture stunning images in low-light environments.

If you want to capture ultra-high quality photos — and even 4K video — without the bulk of an interchangeable lens camera, this might be the right model for you. As an added bonus, the X100V's all-metal construction sports a satin finish for an upscale look and feel.

Fujifilm X100V camera

The fixed 22mm lens has a wide maximum aperture that's great for shooting in low-light environments.

A fixed lens that captures tons of light

The X100V has an integrated 23mm f/2 lens that's terrific for shooting in low-light environments — like an indoor birthday party, or a city street at night. Its wide maximum aperture and shallow depth of field let your subject stand out against a beautifully blurred background. With a 35mm equivalent focal length, the X100V is a wonderful choice for landscapes and street scenes, as well as for close-ups and detail shots.

One of my favorite features is a built-in four-stop neutral density filter, which makes it easier to shoot "wide open" in bright light (think a daytime portrait on a sunny day, where you want to blur the background behind your subject).

Keep in mind that this lens does not zoom, so you'll change your perspective and composition by physically moving closer to or farther away from your subject.

Easily switch between manual and automatic modes

One of the best parts of buying a "nice camera" is that it allows you to develop your technical skills as a photographer over time. You can start off in one of the X100V's automatic modes, and if you feel so inclined, learn to use its intuitive manual controls for more hands-on image creation.

This camera's high-resolution OLED electronic viewfinder can display all your settings and show you what your final image will look like (way cool). The X100V also has engraved metal dials that let you adjust settings without having to take your eye away from the viewfinder.

If you prefer the traditional optical viewfinder of a DSLR, a dedicated switch lets you toggle between electronic and optical viewfinder modes. You can even get a live electronic focus-assist window in the corner when using the optical finder.

Outstanding performance for stills and video

The X100V's 26.1-megapixel APS-C sized sensor and high-speed processing engine combine to give your photos and videos exceptional color reproduction with high ISO sensitivity and low noise.

This camera even records video in 4K Ultra-HD resolution. A 2.5mm microphone input lets you add an external mic so you can capture high-quality audio.

An advanced autofocus system

The X100V's high-speed processing power gives it improved autofocus performance over previous X100 Series models. For subjects on the move, AF-C Custom settings let you optimize autofocus according to the type of movement for extra-precise tracking.

Awesome color reproduction

As a renowned manufacturer of color and black-and-white films for over 80 years, the folks at Fujifilm have a deep understanding of the role color plays in creating memorable photos. The X100V's 17 different film simulation modes — including the popular Provia and Velvia film types — let you use different tones and gradations to add texture, depth, and atmosphere to your photos and videos.

Features

Retro Design: The Fujifilm X100V digital camera is the fifth generation model in the X100 series of premium compact cameras that was launched in 2011. It is designed to look like a classic 35mm film camera with many of the features of a high-quality DSLR. The synthetic leather-wrapped body features new aluminum top and base plates, and traditional dials so you can see many of the camera settings while the camera is off. The camera has a newly-developed high-performance lens, and a new two-way tilting rear LCD monitor.

Image Sensor: The X100V is equipped with the 23.5mm x 15.6mm (APS-C) X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and the high-speed X-Processor 4 image processor. This combination results in excellent image quality with lower noise, high-speed continuous shooting up to 11 fps at full resolution, and super-fast auto focusing.

23mm Lens: The X100V is equipped with a newly-developed F2 23mm fixed focal length Fujinon lens. This is equivalent of a 35mm lens in 35mm photography. The lens has a focus range of 3.9" to infinity.

Note: The camera does not allow for interchangeable lenses, however, two optional conversion lenses are available: the WCL-X100 II 23mm wide conversion lens and the TCL-X100 II 50mm tele-conversion lens.

Tilting LCD Monitor: For the first time in the X100 Series, the X100V features a two-way tilting rear touchscreen LCD monitor. The ultra-thin 3.0" monitor can tilt up for easy viewing of low-angle shots, and tilt down for high angle shots. The 3:2 aspect ratio monitor features approximately 1,620,000 dots and approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode.

Touch Screen Controls: The LCD monitor features touch controls for both shooting and playback functions. Shooting touch controls include Touch Shooting, AF on/off, Focus Area, and Preset Touch Functions. Playback touch controls includes swipe (view next image), pinch-out (zoom in), pinch-in (zoom out), double-tap (zoom in on focus point), and drag (view other areas of image during playback zoom).

Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder: The camera is equipped with an Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder, which allows you to switch between an optical viewfinder and electronic viewfinder. In addition, you can also display an enlarged focus area in the corner of the viewfinder to assist you with manual focusing. As you bring the camera up to your face, an eye sensor in the viewfinder will switch automatically to viewfinder mode. A built-in diopter allows you to adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight, either with or without glasses. Details of each type of viewfinder include the following:

  • Optical Viewfinder (OVF): The Reverse Galilean Optical Viewfinder offers a wide field of view for maximum clarity with no shutter time lag. It has a integrated LCD panel overlay to display shooting information. The OVF has approximately 95% frame coverage and 0.52x magnification.
  • Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): The 0.5" OLED High-Definition Electronic Viewfinder provides approximately 100% coverage, 0.66x magnification, and detailed shooting information with its 3,690,000 dots of resolution. You can preview focus, depth of field, exposure, and white balance before you shoot, and view the photo instantly after shooting.
  • Electronic Rangefinder (ERF): When selected, the enlarged view of the focus area appears in the lower right corner of the viewfinder. You can use this to help you check the focus on a specific area of the frame.

Recording Media: Still images and movies can be recorded onto optional SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. A UHS-I card with a UHS speed class of 3 or better, or a video speed class of V30 or better is recommended for movies or burst photography.

Still Image Quality: The X100V records still images in JPEG format in 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1 aspect ratios in three sizes and two compression ratios (Fine or Normal). RAW images can be recorded from the raw, uncompressed image data from the camera's image sensor. You can also shoot a RAW + JPEG image at the same time, with separate RAW and JPEG files recorded and stored. Lossless RAW images can be compressed using a reversible algorithm that reduces the file size with no loss of image data. RAW format images can be processed on a computer using downloadable software, or converted to JPEG in the camera. The following file sizes are available for JPEG images:

Note: The camera is also capable of recording movies in PAL format with frame rates of 50p, 25p, and 23.98p.

Built-in Wi-Fi: The camera's built-in Wi-Fi lets you connect the camera to your smartphone or computer wirelessly. With the Fujifilm Camera Remote app on your smartphone, you can view and download images and videos to the smartphone, control the camera and take pictures remotely, or copy location data to the camera and save it to your photos (smartphone must have GPS feature). You can also update the camera firmware. When the Fujifilm PC AutoSave application is loaded onto your computer, you can upload pictures from the camera via wireless LAN. See Software section below for software details.

Bluetooth: The camera also lets you pair with your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. To connect via Bluetooth, you'll need the Fujifilm Camera Remote app on your device. While the camera is paired, you can syncronize the camera's clock and location data with your device. The Auto Image Transfer function automatically marks photos for upload as they are taken. The Image Transfer Order lets you upload them to a paired smartphone or tablet.

Exposure Modes: The Fujifilm X100V lets you set the shutter speed and aperture automatically or manually. The shutter speed and aperture settings combine for four shooting modes:

Exposure Mode Shutter Speed Aperture
P: Program AE Automatic Automatic
S: Shutter Priority User Selected Automatic
A: Aperture Priority Automatic User Selected
M: Manual User Selected User Selected

Electronic and Mechanical Shutter: The X100V features a traditional mechanical shutter, as well as an electronic shutter. The electronic shutter that can produce shutter speeds of up to 1/32000 second. Shallow depth-of-field effects can be shot with the aperture wide open even in snow or on the beach. When the electronic shutter is used, there is no shutter sound, as there are no mechanically operated parts being used. You can choose to use the built-in mechanical shutter, if desired, with shutter speed of up to 1/4000 second. In the Mechanical + Electronic Shutter Mode, the camera chooses the shutter type, according to the shooting conditions. For extended time exposures, you can choose Time or Bulb.

Aperture Control: The camera has an aperture ring surrounding the lens to control the aperture opening. The aperture range is F2 to F16, plus an Automatic setting. You can also use the front or rear command dials to adjust the aperture, if desired.

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity from ISO 160 to ISO 12800 in 1/3 EV increments. Extended settings are equivalent to ISO 80 (Low), ISO 100 (Low), ISO 125 (Low), ISO 25600 (High), or ISO 51200 (High). The Auto settings will adjust the sensitivity settings according to the shooting conditions with maximum ISO of 800, 1600, or 3200. The higher the sensitivity setting, the better the camera is at reducing blur in poor lighting conditions, however, high settings can result in more noise in the recorded images.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, Incandescent light and Underwater (requires waterproof case). In addition, you can measure for a white balance value (and save three as presets), and select from a list of color temperatures.

Film Simulation: The X100V can simulate the effects of different kinds of film, including black-and-white. You can select one of the following options:

  • Provia/Standard: standard color reproduction
  • Velvia/Vivid: a high-contrast palette of saturated colors, suited for nature photos
  • Astia/Soft: a soft-toned palette of less-saturated colors
  • Classic Chrome: soft color and enhanced shadow contrast for a calm look.
  • Pro Negative Std: a soft-toned palette. The range of hues available for skin tones is enhanced; a good choice for studio portraits.
  • Pro Negative Hi: offers slightly more contrast than Pro Negative Std, making it ideal for outdoor portraits.
  • Classic Negative: provides enhanced color with hard tonality to increase image depth.
  • Eterna/Cinema: gives you a film-look movie with soft color and rich shadow tone.
  • Acros: for taking black-and-white photos with rich gradation and outstanding sharpness.
  • Monochrome: standard black-and-white
  • Sepia: takes pictures in sepia tone
Note: Acros and Monochrome are also available with yellow (Ye), red (R), and green (G) filters, which deepen shades of gray corresponding to the selected color.

Grain Effect: You can add a degree of graininess to your photos with the Grain Effect. There are options for roughness (strong, weak), and grain size (large, small).

Color Chrome Effect: Color Chrome Effect adds more contrast and saturation to the colors in your images, particularly reds, yellows, and greens. There is also a separate Color Chrome FX Blue effect for increasing the range of tones for rendering blues. For both effects, you can select strong, weak, or turn the effect off.

Color Space: Depending upon how you intend to use the image, you can choose the output color space at the general sRGB setting or the broader color rendition of Adobe RGB.

Multiple Exposure: The X100V lets you combine up to nine different exposures into one. You can choose how the camera creates these multiple exposures:

  • Additive: The camera adds the exposures together. Depending upon the number of shots, you may have to lower exposure compensation.
  • Average: The camera automatically optimizes exposure for the final picture. The background will be optimally exposed for those shots.
  • Bright: The camera compares each exposure, and chooses only the brightest pixel at each location. Colors may be mixed depending on their brightness and hue.
  • Dark: Similar to bright, however, the camera chooses only the darkest pixel at each location.

Exposure Compensation: Using the dedicated Exposure Compensation dial on the top of the camera, you can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 19 steps from -3.0 to +3.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. When the dial is set to Custom (C), you can adjust the Exposure Compensation from -5.0 to +5.0 EV using the front or rear command dial.

Continuous Shooting: You can capture motion in a series of pictures using the Continuous Shooting, or Burst Mode. At full resolution, you can choose between High Speed Burst (11 fps or 8 fps) and Low Speed Burst (6 fps, 5 fps, 4 fps, or 3 fps). You can also select a burst mode using only the electronic shutter at full resolution (20 fps, 10 fps), or at 1.25x Crop (30 fps, 20 fps, 10 fps, or 8 fps). There is a limit to the number of recordable frames for each Burst Mode selection.

HDR: When High Dynamic Range (HDR) is selected, the camera takes three shots each time the shutter button is pressed. The exposure is varied with each shot and combined into a single picture, to preserve details in highlights and shadows. You can choose the amount the brightness varies between photographs: 200%, 400%, 800%, Auto (200-800%), or HDR Plus (maximum variation).

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer. The 10 second self timer is recommended for self portraits, while the 2-second self timer is used to reduce blur caused by the camera moving when the shutter button is pressed. Use of a tripod is highly recommended.

Interval Timer Photography: In addition to the self timer, the X100V offers interval timer shooting, allowing you to take a specified number of photos at a set interval over a period of time. You can choose the number of shots (1 to 999), the interval between shots (1 second to 24 hours), and the start waiting time (1 second to 24 hours). The display turns off between shots, and turns back on a few seconds before the next shot is taken. Use of a tripod and a full battery is recommended. To prevent dramatically changing exposures between shots, you can turn on Exposure Shooting for Interval Timer Shooting.

Auto Focus: In most cases, the X100V uses Intelligent Hybrid AF (TTL contrast-detection/phase-detection AF). You can choose between two AF Modes: Single or Continuous. You can also focus manually using the focus ring on the lens. You can also choose the focus area: single, point, zone, wide/tracking, or all.

Flash Modes: The X100V has a built-in flash with an effective range of 1.0' to 24.3'. Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose the Flash Control mode (TTL, Manual, Commander, or Off), and the Flash Mode (Flash Auto, Standard Flash, and Slow Sync). The X100V has a hot shoe for adding optional external flash units.

Light Metering: The X100V uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure. You can select from four metering options: Multi, Spot, Center-weighted, or Average.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include a side-by-side two-frame display (with smaller thumbnails of the previous and next frames, 9-image grid (3 x 3) and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails. In the 9- and 100-image grid views, the highlighted image is slightly enlarged.

Playback Zoom/Cropping: You can enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size). After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition, you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies will have an aspect ratio of 3:2, and will be saved as a separate file.

Resize: To create a small copy of a picture, you can select "Resize" from the menu. The new images vary in size with the original image.

Power Requirements: The X100Vis powered by the supplied NP-W126S Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (7.2V, 1260mAh). A fully-charged NP-W126S is good for approximately 350 shots (with Electronic Viewfinder) or 420 (with Optical Viewfinder). For recording movies, the actual battery life (with normal starts and stops) is approximately 45 minutes for 4K or 50 minutes for Full HD. When shooting movies continuously, the battery life is 55 minutes (4K) or 75 minutes (FHD).

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for a preset length of time (5 min, 2 min, 1 min, 30 sec, 15 sec, or off). Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.
