Google Nest keeps an eye and ear on your front porch

A standard doorbell lets you know that someone is at the door. The Google Nest Hello is equipped with a camera that lets you see exactly who it is, and two-way talk so you can chat with them before you let them in. It sends notifications when it detects people. That way you can see if an expected package is delivered, and whether it stays where it belongs.
Nest Hello doorbell

The Nest Hello lets you see who's ringing the bell — and even talk to them — before you let them in.

Product Research

Features

Overview: Google Nest Video Doorbell (Wired), formerly Nest Hello, is a doorbell camera that lets you see who's at your door at all times. It replaces your existing wired doorbell, so it's easy to install. It does not include a chime, so you can keep your hardwired existing chime. The Video Doorbell (Wired) continuously streams High Definition video, giving you a clear, bright view of everything at your front door, even at night. It also lets you talk to your visitor through the Nest app on your smart phone or tablet. Nest Video Doorbell (Wired) is also compatible with Google Home, which can announce when someone is at your door. Dimensions: Width 1.7", Height 4.595", Depth 0.932", Weight 4.28 ounces.

Camera: Video Doorbell (Wired)'s camera has a 1/3", 3-megapixel color sensor to deliver bright color images up to 1600 x 1200, 30 fps. Built-in infrared LEDs let you see clearly in low light or at nighttime, while HDR (high dynamic range) provides great detail in bright and dark areas. The camera produces HD video in 4:3 aspect ratio which is designed to show people from head to toe, while the 160° (diagonal) lens gives you a wide field of view. Video Doorbell (Wired) streams video 24/7, allowing you to check the view at your front door at any time.

Wireless Requirements: Google Nest Video Doorbell (Wired) operates on Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) on the 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands. With 128-bit encryption and two-step verification, your video stays safe in the cloud. An optional subscription to Nest Aware lets you record and store video for up to 30 days for retrieval at any time.

HD Talk and Quick Responses: The camera has a built-in microphone that can pick up sounds, and a speaker that allows you to talk to anyone nearby. The Nest app has a Talk button that turns on the microphone on your phone or tablet so you can carry on a two-way conversation. A Talk & Listen tone on the Video Doorbell (Wired) lets the person at the door know you're about to say something. The Nest app also has three pre-recorded messages called Quick Responses that you can play when the doorbell rings and you're not able to come to the door. The Quick Responses are:

  • "Just a sec... we'll be right there."
  • "Hi there! You can just leave it. Thanks!"
  • "Hi there! No one can answer the door right now. We'll be notified you stopped by."

Quiet Time: The Video Doorbell (Wired) features a quick way to turn off the chime. This is helpful when someone is sleeping and you don't want the doorbell to disturb them. In the Nest app, you can simply press the Quiet Time button to mute the chime. You'll be given options for how long to mute the chime. If you have a Google Assistant speaker, Quiet Time mutes those announcements as well. With the chime turned off, the Nest Video Doorbell (Wired) still continues to send notifications to your phone.

Camera Settings: In the Nest app, you can configure the Video Doorbell (Wired) camera to suit your needs. The settings include: Camera on/off, Indoor chime on/off, Home/Away Assist, Schedule, Notifications, Visitor Announcements, Quality and bandwidth, Night Vision, Camera sharing, Activity history, Status light, Chime duration, Microphone, Spoken language, Wi-Fi connection, Where (naming the camera), Delete History, and Remove camera.

Nest App: The Nest app lets you know who's at your front door. You can view the video stream from the Nest Video Doorbell (Wired) camera at any time 24/7. When someone rings your doorbell, the Nest app sends an alert to your phone or tablet. The app can also control other Nest products at the same time, including the Next Learning Thermostat, Nest Secure alarm system, Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, the Nest x Yale Lock, and the Nest variety of security cameras. The app is compatible with Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) running iOS 10.0 or later. It is also compatible with select devices running Android (version varies with the device). The Nest application for laptops and desktop computers is available for Windows 7 or later, Mac OS X v10.9 or later, with the latest versions of Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox.

Customer Q&A

3 questions already asked

Q
Would mounting this on a metal surface interfere with this doorbell performance?
marco  Jul 07, 2018
3 answers
A
I mounted this on an extruded aluminum door frame (you need to drill pilot holes) and it works fine.
martyn  Jul 08, 2018
A
It depends. Since this doorbell needs a decent WiFi signal to upload the video feed and to real-time audio communicate with whoever is at the door, a metal surface between the WiFi router and the doorbell could act as an electromagnetic shield which would prevent your WiFi signal from reaching the doorbell. However, if your router is positioned on the same side of the metal surface as the doorbell itself, then the WiFi signal may be able to reach the doorbell . then you're golden!
alan  Jul 08, 2018
A
As long as the cable ends don't touch the metal surface, you should be fine. However, metal has a tendency to reduce WiFi signals, so I'd make sure your router or access point isn't too far away.

Q
Is it battery operated or electric?
moonman  Mar 20, 2018
1 answer
A
It is operated via the wired connection to your existing doorbell. If you watch the installation video on the Nest website, you'll see how it works. It is not battery operated, nor can it be.
