Its large, back-illuminated CMOS sensor and speedy processor combine to make it super-responsive, with high-speed autofocus in as little as 0.09 seconds and continuous shooting at up to 14 frames per second.

A stellar built-in lens

The camera's 24-600mm lens gives you enormous range to capture everything from sweeping landscapes to tight close-ups of subjects way off in the distance. Bright maximum apertures at either end of the focal range allow sharp handheld shooting, even in challenging light. You can also shoot wide open in extremely bright light and get well-exposed images with defocused backgrounds like you never thought possible thanks to the added speed of the electronic shutter and a built-in ND filter.

Advanced features for videographers

The RX10 III records 4K video at up to 30 frames per second. It also produces stunning, low-noise, Full HD video which, at 120 frames per second, blows most of its competition right out of the water. High frame rate (HFR) shooting is also possible, at up to 960 frames per second in Full HD resolution, for clear, smooth action in 40X super slow motion. A multi-interface shoe lets you connect professional accessories, and a 3.5mm microphone input lets you add an optional microphone to capture balanced audio to match the camera's video quality. The enhanced Zebra function tells you which parts of a scene are overexposed so you can easily make adjustments, and Gamma Display Assist allows you to view the scene with natural contrast on the LCD or in the viewfinder.

Advanced features like Picture Profile and the S-Log2 Gamma setting let you adjust color, gradation, and dynamic range for richly detailed movies in any light. A clean HDMI output sends uncompressed movie data to an external recorder or monitor. You can keep recording internally to the camera even when using this function.

Tiltable 3" LCD Screen: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10M3 digital camera has a 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD screen with 1,228,800 dots. The LCD brightness control can be set to Auto, Manual (-2 to +2), or Sunny Weather (appropriate for shooting outdoors). You can tilt the LCD up approximately 107° for low-angle shots, and down approximately 42° for high-angle shots.

OLED Viewfinder: In addition to the 3" LCD screen, the camera is equipped with a 0.39" XGA electronic OLED viewfinder with 2,359,296 dots. The viewfinder has a -4.0 to +3.0m-1 diopter adjustment to adjust it to your eyesight. An eye sensor next to the viewfinder will automatically turn on the viewfinder and turn off the monitor when you raise the camera to your eye. In the menu, you can manually choose the viewfinder or the monitor.

Recording Media: The camera is compatible with the following recording media: Memory Stick Duo (still images only), Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark 2 only for movie recording), Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo, SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards (UHS-I U1 compatible, Class 10 or higher). For recording 4K movies, SDXC memory cards with a capacity of 64 GB or more with an SD Speed Class of 10 or UHS Speed Class 1 is required. If recording in 100 Mbps or more, UHS Speed Class 3 is required.

Image Recording Formats: The camera records still images in JPEG (with Extra Fine, Fine, and Standard compression), RAW (Sony ARW 2.3 Format), and JPEG+RAW formats (images from both formats created at the same time). Moving images can be recorded in XAVC S (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 with 2-channel LPCM audio), AVCHD Ver. 2.0 format (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 with Dolby Digital 2ch audio) or MP4 (MPEG-4/H.264 with 2-channel AAC audio).

Image Sensor: The camera is equipped with a 1.0" stacked CMOS image sensor with DRAM chip that enables up to 40x super slow motion and up to 1/32000 sec super-high-speed shutter. This 13.2 x 8.8mm (1") 20.1MP Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with approximately 20.9-million total pixels and 20.2-million effective pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Paired with the image sensor is the high speed BIONZ X image processor.

Lens: The camera is equipped with a bright Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* (T-star) 25x optical zoom lens. It has a focal length of 24-600mm (35mm equivalent/3:2 aspect ratio) for recording still images, and 26-630mm for recording 16:9 movies. The maximum aperture is F2.4 across the zoom range, while the minimum aperture is F11 or F16 depending upon the shooting mode.

Shutter Types: The RX10M3 offers both a mechanical shutter and an electronic shutter. The Shutter Type settings are as follows:

  • Auto: The shutter type is automatically switched based on the shooting conditions and shutter speed.
  • Mechanical Shutter: The camera operates with the mechanical shutter only. The shutter speed can be set from 30 seconds to 1/2000 second, plus Bulb. Both the mechanical and electronic shutter sounds are heard. The electronic shutter sound can be turned off, if desired.
  • Electronic Shutter: The camera shoots with the electronic shutter only. The shutter speed can be set from 30 seconds to 1/32000 second. Only the electronic shutter sound is heard, and can be turned off, if desired.

Zooming: In addition to the 25x optical zoom, you can reach higher zoom scales by engaging the Smart Zoom, Clear Image Zoom or the Digital Zoom. Smart Zoom enlarges images without causing deterioration of the image by partially cropping the image (available when the image size is set to Medium, Small, or VGA). Clear Image Zoom uses an image process with less deterioration. Clear Image Zoom magnifies the image up to 50x (Large image size). Digital Zoom obtains a higher zoom, but with some image deterioration. Digital Zoom magnifies up to 100x (Large image size).

SteadyShot: Sony's SteadyShot image stabilization can help you obtain blur-free movies and still images. SteadyShot utilizes optical camera-shake compensation supplemented with electronic anti-rolling type image stabilization for even sharper images. There are three levels of SteadyShot for movies: Intelligent Active, Active, and Standard. For still images, SteadyShot can simply be turned on or off.

Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-RX10M3 allows you to choose from multiple image sizes in four aspect ratios: 3:2 (for printing), 16:9 (for viewing on an HDTV), 4:3 (for viewing on a computer), and 1:1 (for shooting as a medium format camera). Q
can this camera sync with White Lightning studio lights via a cord?

A
The only compatible external flash/lighting accessories listed are Sony models (HVL-F20M, HVL-F43M, HVL-RL1); so it's unclear whether the DSC-RX10M3 would work with 3rd party studio lights. You may want to contact Sony's support department directly for more details--you can reach them by phone at 888-222-7669 or check their support site here: https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=7
