This is a Port not a Remaster.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have always loved the Dark Souls series, and Dark souls 1 was the best by far. When this game was announced, I initially was not too excited for it, but then I started to reminisce. I remembered all of the good times I had with this game, and the many hours it robbed from me that I'll never want to get back. I decided to pre-order and pick up this Remastered version, very excited to put it in and play immediately when I got home. Let's say this: It is EXACTLY as good as the original version. That's the best review I can give, because this game is almost exactly like the first version in every way, including the graphics. Sadly, this game falls prey to the phenomenon that happens to ALL memories of video games from the past, in that you remember them looking so much better. The graphics are from an era where this was considered good but not great, and in this era, the are nearly so painstakingly bad that it just about ruins the immersion. However, after about 4 or 5 hours of gritting my teeth and sticking with the blobby, fuzzy, and smeared graphics of the scenery, I became desensitized to it's atrociousness, and I don't even think about it anymore. There are a few new features, but I haven't had a chance to explore them. I've played this game so many times, I basically know what I'm looking for and what I'll get out of it as an experience, so those aspects of the game are immediately what I made for. This game is DEFINITELY worth playing if you HAVE NOT played the very first Dark Souls, as it was a masterpiece of a game. However, if you've already played it, and nostalgia is not knocking on your front door, skip it. Leave those memories looking pretty and intact, lest you lose them to the original game's clunky mechanics and smudgy graphics. PRAISE THE SUN!

Better than the original
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I personally love the original game and this remaster is fantastic. Better frame rate, better visuals, and better game play while keeping the difficulty of the souls series alive. This is a remaster that is well polished and you can tell the developers actually spent time to redefine this game. If you get this game, expect a challenge.

A Rerelease of Dark Souls
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Like the original, Dark Souls is still hard as ever but it was still a blast to play even for a second time. Compared to the original game, the graphics remained relatively the same but the frame rate noticeably improved, so it lagged less overall. In addition, one gripe I still had with the game is that sometimes summoning someone else can lead to a very strong player appearing and wiping areas free of enemies. Other than that, which is optional too, this game still proves to be a lot of fun many years later.

Great game, but tough
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great game and a fantastic update to it, but there isn't much changed to the original. That's good and bad as if you have played through it you get a smoother framerate and higher resolution but little else new. A no brainer if you haven't played it though (unless you aren't fond of tough but fair games).

One of the Best Games I've Ever Played
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game has a reputation for being difficult so let's address that. Yes, from start to finish you will die playing this game many, MANY times. But unlike other games, it's structured so that death doesn't feel like a waste of time--it's always a learning experience. The game is 95% of the time, pretty fair with enemies' abilities being fairly clear. As I died, I could almost always pinpoint exactly what mistake I made that caused it. Death is also a challenge to get better, as you make your way back to the site of your last death to reclaim your Souls (money /EXP). It's a brilliant system that feels absolutely amazing when you get it right. Gameplay-wise, it's a solid action title, heavy on exploration with an amazing, interconnected world. As a fan of Metroid I was very pleased with the similarity there. Many weapons have their own unique moves, pros and cons which makes experimentation fun. Performance on my regular PS4 was excellent, 60 FPS almost all the time, which is very important in a game like this. Graphically, this is visibly an up-rezzed last-gen port with no major additions, but I think the lower price point reflects that. I never played the original, but I gather this runs much better and has a more robust online community. If you're interested in the series, this is absolutely the place to start and I hope you won't let the game's reputation scare you away. Just try it out at your own pace and you'll be ok. Praise the sun!!

Great way to get started in the Souls franchise
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Since I missed the boat on Dark Souls in the last console generation, I was glad to see it remastered for the PS4. The updates visuals look great, and it's definitely a wake up call to GIT GUD at gaming. Brutal difficulty at times, but man ksnit worth it when you finally triumph after repeated attempts. Can't wait to pick up and plays Dark Souls 2 and 3 next.

Great way to start Dark Souls
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I haven't played Dark Souls before and all I've heard was that it was difficult. One day I finally decided to bite the bullet and picked up the remaster when it was on sale and ended up enjoying it a lot. I finished and am currently in my second run-through in new game. I would play more if I can find the time now.

Darker Than Ever
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you've never played a "souls" game before, there's no better place to start than here. This RPG is hard as nails, has lots of customization options, and is now even more graphically enhanced for current hardware. If you find yourself struggling with this one, all I can say is "git gud".
